Savona, a northwestern Italian port-city and capital of the Province of Savona Province is on the Gulf of Genoa.  Early in its history it was a small Roman town.  In the 7th century it was destroyed by the Lombards and thereafter became a thriving port city.  In 1528 the city was annexed by Genoa.  The city is also located in the Liguria Region.  The city is a modern industrial center, but is also contains many historic sites.  One such site is a Renaissance cathedral, completed in the early 1600's.

Iron and steel, machinery, chemicals, pottery, electrical equipment, processed food, and glass.

Population:

69,800 (1990 estimate).
